Understanding DC Latching Solenoids
When selecting a solenoid for use in agricultural irrigation automation, it is essential to understand the distinctions between DC latching solenoids, standard DC solenoids, and AC solenoids:
DC Latching Solenoids: These solenoids require only a brief electrical pulse to switch between open and closed positions. Once activated, they remain in their state without requiring continuous power, making them highly energy efficient and ideal for low-power controllers such as the Verdi Block Controller.
DC Solenoids: These solenoids require a continuous DC power supply to remain activated. If power is lost, they return to their default position.
AC Solenoids: These solenoids operate using alternating current (AC) and are typically used in systems with AC power sources. Like DC solenoids, they require continuous power to maintain their state.
Important Note
The Verdi Block Controller is only compatible with DC latching solenoids and is not compatible with standard DC or standard AC solenoids. Verify that the DC latching solenoid operates at the required voltage of the Verdi Block Controller: ±9VDC or ±12VDC
Understanding 2-Way vs. 3-Way DC Latching Solenoids
2-Way DC Latching Solenoids: These solenoids have two ports—an inlet and an outlet—and control water flow by either allowing it to pass through or blocking it. They are used for simple on/off operation of valves. These solenoids are simple to install and low cost.
3-Way DC Latching Solenoids: These solenoids have three ports—an inlet, an outlet, and an exhaust or vent port. In irrigation systems, they are commonly used to release pressure from the valve diaphragm, ensuring reliable closing, especially in lower-pressure applications.
If your irrigation system requires reliable closing, especially in lower-pressure applications, a 3-way solenoid (and valve) is often preferred. However, for simple on/off control, a 2-way solenoid (and valve) is sufficient.
Recommended DC Latching Solenoids
Below is a guide to the most common DC latching solenoids used in agricultural irrigation automation systems, categorized by manufacturer, model, and valve compatibility.
Our Valve and Solenoid Recommendations
Irritrol 200B Series or Netafim 75 Series
These valves are low cost, have been on the market for many years, are reliable and widly available for irrigation supply stores. Remember to take a look at the technical sheet to ensure these valves are compatible within your system’s flow and pressure.
Pair the Irritrol 200B Series valve with the Irritrol/Toro model DCL DC 2-way latching solenoid.
Pair the Netafim 75 Series valve with the Baccara/Netafim model 61NETNO-L 3-way DC latching solenoid.

Selecting the Right Solenoid
Valve Compatibility: Ensure the solenoid matches the valve type (2-way or 3-way).
Orifice Size: The orifice size of the solenoid must match the valve’s specifications to ensure proper operation.
Voltage: Verify that the solenoid operates at the required voltage of the Verdi Block Controller ±9VDC or ±12VDC
Power Efficiency: DC-latching solenoids are the most power-efficient option, making them the only option for battery-powered or solar-powered systems.

FAQ
I have an existing AC solenoid, is the Verdi Block Controller compatible?
No. The Verdi Block Controller is only compatible with DC latching solenoids and is not compatible with standard DC or standard AC solenoids. Verify that the DC latching solenoid operates at the required voltage of the Verdi Block Controller: ±9VDC or ±12VDC
